The hazard of nanoparticles
The hazard of nanoparticles has been noted lately. In the water treatment industry there are no known methods to efficiently purify water from nanoparticles. We have therefore commissioned KTH make an initial test on the removal of silver nanoparticles. It has been successful. We now continue the tests with other types of nanoparticles.
Nanoparticles can penetrate through the skin into the blood and bring other toxic molecules along. Health and environmental effects are largely unknown.
The human cell is approximately 5 micrometer in section – thus 5 000 nanometers. A nanoparticle therefore penetrates easily through the cell membrane and could possibly cause harm.
